Dr. Spaite is a tenured Full Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson and has been on the faculty of the Medical School for 24 years. He is a board certified Emergency Physician. He is the EMS Base Hospital Medical Director for University Medical Center and Director of EMS Research at the Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center. Dr. Spaite was the Director of Emergency Services at the University Medical Center for six years and medical director of the LifeNet Emergency Helicopter Program for 18 years.
Dr. Spaite has an active Emergency Medical Services research program that has published over 100 research articles in the areas of trauma outcomes analysis, EMS system modeling, and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. He has made more than 50 national and international presentations of his research. His research grants total over nine million dollars and he has authored medical textbooks that have been published in English, Spanish, and Russian.
Throughout his career, Dr. Spaite has kept abreast of research related to health and wellness and has paid particular attention to how these issues play out in the lives of pastors. One particular area of focus has been on the research related to stress, overwork, and exhaustion…especially as they impact the development of disease. His studies have led to a remarkable discovery of convergence between scientific and biblical truth in the matters of physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Based upon this research, he has written the book: “Timebomb in the Church: Defusing Pastoral Burnout” published by Beacon Hill Press. “Timebomb” has also been published in Spanish.
Dr. Spaite grew up in a parsonage and for many years has had a heart for the challenges faced by today’s pastors. He has served on local church boards for 25 years and been actively involved in biblical teaching in many settings. Dr. Spaite has spoken at many pastors’ and lay conferences, retreats, and seminars throughout the US and Canada.
Dr. Spaite serves on the lay teaching staff of CrossRoads Church in Chandler, Arizona. His wife Dana is the Lead Children’s Pastor at CrossRoads. Their daughter Rebecca is a teacher in the Chandler School District and their son David is preparing for pastoral ministry at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City.
