Dennis Bickers is an Area Minister and serves on the executive staff for the American Baptist Churches of Indiana and Kentucky. He works with approximately 320 churches in that region where he assists with pastoral searches, conflict, and church growth and transformation issues.
Dennis became a bivocational pastor in 1981 when he accepted the call to serve Hebron Baptist Church in southeast Indiana. He began that ministry without any ministry education or pastoral experience. He served that church for 20 years while working in a factory for most of that time. During those years he also graduated from a Bible school and earned a bachelor's degree. In the spring of 2006 Dennis earned a Master of Arts in Religion with a concentration in leadership and then enrolled in a Doctor of Ministry program which he continues to pursue. His passion lies in the area of addressing the role of coaching in equipping bivocational ministers for greater ministry effectiveness. Dennis was ordained in 1982 by Hebron Baptist Church in Madison, Indiana.
Dennis felt frustration as a bivocational pastor in the lack of resources developed specifically for the bivocational pastor. He has subsequently written several books specifically for bivocational pastors and the small churches they often serve. In order to better support and encourage them, he offers a website, a blog, and a free monthly e-newsletter.
His books include The Tentmaking Pastor: The Joy of Bivocational Ministry; The Bivocational Pastor: Two Jobs, One Ministry; The Healthy Small Church: Diagnosis and Treatment for the Big Issues; The Work of the Bivocational Pastor; and Transforming the Small Church: From Maintenance-Minded to Missional.
Dennis was born in Madison, Indiana. He is married to Faye and they have two married children and six grandchildren. He enjoys golf, motorcycle riding, fishing, and reading.
